Smriti Irani challenges Rahul Gandhi to contest in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi: 'If he's sure of himself...'

The political landscape of the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh appears primed for an intense political showdown. On Monday, Union Minister and incumbent MP Smriti Irani issued a challenge to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to contest from his former stronghold.

"Amethi's ex-MP disrespected the people of Amethi by contesting from Wayanad. This caused distress in Amethi. His rejection of Ram Lalla's invitation further troubled Amethi," she remarked, adding, "I challenge him (Rahul) to contest from Amethi alone in the Lok Sabha elections."

Irani also criticized Rahul Gandhi, stating that the people of Amethi are greatly displeased with him. She highlighted that during the Nyay Yatra's visit, the streets of Amethi remained deserted, reflecting the locals' resentment towards the Gandhi family.

"Amethi has received investments worth ₹6523 crore in the Investors Summit... The people's anger towards the Gandhi family is evident...Today, when he (Rahul Gandhi) visited, he was greeted by empty streets... In Amethi, I contested against a candidate backed by many... The empty streets signify their disassociation with the Gandhi Family," Irani stated.

In contrast, during his yatra, Rahul Gandhi criticized the BJP-led central government, alleging their bias against Dalits and their focus on elitist interests.

Rahul Gandhi's Bharat Jodo Yatra from Manipur to Mumbai, covering 15 states ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, has gained momentum. Amethi has historically been a Congress stronghold, with several prominent members of the Gandhi family representing it over the years. However, in 2019, Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi by approximately 55,000 votes, marking a significant shift in the constituency's political landscape.
